Phone and Rogers

There’s been a lot of excitement about unlocking an iPhone in the last 24 hours.
First, the iphonesimfree.com group started selling their software to resellers such as this australian group. After ordering from them (which was probably a huge mistake, but patience is a difficult virtue to have with an iphone on your hands), I received some emails that lead me to believe that I will likely not get the software from them. They are now offering a free unlocker here (I haven’t tested this).

In much better news though, other programmers have released an open source version of their own unlocker program. The news is out and the file (and source) can be downloaded.
A tutorial on how to get this running on your iphone is here.
The process takes about 20 minutes and is relatively simple for those who have some experience with working from a command line. And yes, it WORKS!

Now, after plugging in my Rogers card, I have to think about the money that any data transfer will cost me. Here’s a great entry on how we’re being ripped off in Canada and here is a petition to hopefully change this. In the meantime I’ve started dreaming about starting my own cell phone company.

BTW, Here’s a great tutorial about how to install some 3rd party apps on your iphone.

Now, when will you get an iPhone? If you have any questions on how to get it to work, go ahead!
